JM 200 Introduction to Communication

An overview of the definitions, principles, procedures, roles and responsibilities of communication by examining how language is used in communication and how communication has evolved in society.

JM 201 Mass Communication Law and Ethics

Focuses on human rights and freedoms, covering philosophy, government regulations, defamation, journalism law and other relevant laws and civil regulations. Explores the responsibilities, ethics and morals that media practitioners should possess.

JM 202 New Media Studies

Study of current trends and principles in new media, recent shifts in communication technologies, and the evolution of film, broadcasting, and online and social media with analyses of electronic resources, internet memes and popular online videos.

JM 204 Mass Media and Society

Surveys the roles, responsibilities, functions, and overall influence of media, exploring issues of government regulations on the media, and the laws governing speech on the local, regional, and international levels.

JM 206 Introduction to Speech Communication

A close look at methods and strategies communication such as effective speaking, conveying emotions and how to be more creative with communication.

JM 210 Introduction to Journalism

An overview of the terminology, history, concepts, ethics and evolution in journalism. Explores the roles and responsibilities of the media, the structure and formats found in print, video and online media.

JM 211 Basic News Reporting

An introduction offering a more practical approach to reporting the news and understanding news elements and ethics, news gathering and different types of news coverage. Students will learn about interviewing, pinpointing news pegs, organizing ideas, and using proper language for news reporting and writing.

JM 212 Advanced News Reporting

The course covers investigative reporting, interpretative reporting, how to write articles based on news conferences and news releases while focusing on the latest news from ASEAN and international news agencies.

JM 230 Introduction to Broadcasting

An introduction to the radio and television industry and broadcast production, emphasizing the history of broadcasting, and the necessary roles and responsibilities of members of a broadcast team. This course also explores recent changes to the format since the advent of digital broadcasting.

JM 231 Writing for Broadcasting

Overview of the broadcast news format with a focus on radio and television scriptwriting and how to tell stories more effectively for broadcast, with a look at different genres of news programs and the ethical issues concerning broadcasting.

JM 270 Film Studies

Introduction to understanding the power of films and cinematic language. Students will learn about the standard shots and angles used in film, different genres, along with a brief history of film movements. Students also will learn about different cultural, socioeconomic and political contexts that have influenced film.

 

JM 300 Communication Theory

Study of concepts and hypotheses of human communication in different behavioral and social contexts through an examination of analytical research methods. These include: personal communication, interpersonal communication, small group communication, organizational communication, and mass communication.

JM 301 Art for Communication

An introduction to art appreciation and art history with instruction about basic visual language and composition found in painting, photography, graphic art, and film.

JM 302 Communication Research

The course teaches about the principles and procedures behind acceptable social research through the use of proper methodologies for research papers and studies. Students will learn how to design acceptable data collection methods and how to ask the most relevant and fair questions in order to extract the most valuable information.

JM 306 Global Media Industries

This course explores the business theory, research, and practice found in global media industries as the field is transforming and as distribution methods are shifting due to political, economic, cultural, and technological changes, which offer opportunities and present challenges. There is also an overview of media policy and regulations found in the Thai, ASEAN, and international media industries.

JM 308 Political Communication

Covers political speech, messaging and actions from political candidates and officials as well as organizations and individuals trying to spread their beliefs and convictions and influence policy change at the macro and micro levels.

JM 310 Editorial and Article Writing

Instruction and practice in writing opinions and personal analyses into digestible, influential editorial pieces for written or broadcast formats. Students will work on developing their voice and expressing a reasoned point of view with clarity while backing up ideas with facts.

JM 311 News Editing

An overview of the preparation, selection, and correction processes while publishing and distributing articles, photos and videos. This course also looks at the factual verification, headlining and other key publishing processes.

JM 318 Feature Writing

Students will learn about principles, formats, and steps for writing feature stories for mass media by collecting information and writing colorfully, as well as presenting information clearly and attractively with an emphasis on creativity.

JM 319 Current Affairs

An examination of relevant national and international affairs with regard to politics, economics, society and culture, exploring why certain issues gain a global following while other stories remain less widespread in scope. What countries and what issues drive the news and why?

JM 330 Radio and Television Production

Explores basic concepts and strategies and production procedures used in professional broadcast studios, such as pre-production and post-production operations, planning strategies and technical skills for digital television production. Students will develop the ability to think critically about their own productions.

JM 339 Announcing in Broadcasting

An overview into the practical roles and responsibilities for announcers and presenters on radio, television, in public speeches and in live performances. Students explore how to best project themselves and how to strategize about when to use specific language and tone. 17

JM 356 Creativity for Strategic Communication

Examines the definitions, forms and methods needed in strategic communication with a focus on theoretical and practical understanding of communication objectives, consumer insights and creative development as well as evaluation.

JM 357 Media and Children

A study of the rules, regulations, and laws protecting children’s rights in various forms of media and communication tools such as broadcasting, print media, advertising. Students will learn about the effects of media on children’s attitudes and behavior.

JM 364 Principles of Marketing Communications

This course focuses on the principles and planning procedures of marketing communication, analyzing the association and relationship between marketing communication practitioners and the media, and the tools that are used.

JM 367 Audience Analysis

Explores the measurement tools that are used to gauge audience reaction and attitudes to issues, ideas, products, political and social groups, as well as individuals in the public eye. Students will be taught how to compile properly conducted, accurate assessments and gain a greater understanding of perceptions and attitudes. Other factors that students will consider include: social influence, family hierarchy and specific cultural norms that may influence perception and decision-making.

JM 372 Photography for Communication

Students will learn practical skills and knowledge about photography, focusing on shooting with purpose while learning the technical principles of digital photography, as well as film processing, picture composition and lighting workshops.

JM 375 International Film

This class explores political, social and cultural issues and ideas from around the world represented through internationally acclaimed films. Films will be shown, analyzed and critiqued and the subtext and the overall significance of the films will be examined. Students will learn standard cinematic terms and concepts and understand the importance of famous film movements.18

JM 402 Multicultural Communication

A study of the cultural dimensions found in interpersonal and organizational communication. There will be a focus on multicultural approaches and other cultural factors that influence communication and behavior of social groups, sub-cultures and ethnicity in Thailand, ASEAN, and inter-regional societies.

JM 412 Multimedia Journalism

This course focuses on the electronic publishing process and how to express information by making the fullest and best use of video, audio, photos and text and combinations of these platforms.

JM 421 Media Business Management

Instruction on the relevant concepts, principles, procedures, strategies and data sources necessary to manage media business. Student will examine case studies and evaluate and compare media business practices and structures.

JM 427 Seminar in Journalism and Social Change

An examination of journalism and media and how it relates to social change in the context of media convergence. Students will explore media culture, how a new global media environment is emerging and whether the ethical responsibilities of media practitioners are changing.

JM 451 Corporate Communication

An overview of corporate communication used in today’s business world. Student will learn how different types of images and text are used during corporate functions, to express corporate identity and through marketing. Corporate organizational structure will be explored, along with how different businesses maintain their relationships with the media, government, employees and stakeholders.

JM 456 Strategic Brand Communication

A study into branding concepts, brand importance, brand equity, brand management, and marketing communication planning used to build and maintain brand identity.

JM 457 Issue Management and Crisis Communication

This course focuses on issue management and crisis communication, analysis of issues and problem solving, exploring various methods of communication used by governments and business organizations when dealing with issue and crisis management.

JM 476 Short Film and Documentary Film Production

A practical course teaching the fundamental skills required for digital film production. Students will produce a short documentary or fictional narrative film and learn how to manage a range of technical, stylistic, and conceptual challenges.

JM 490 Internship

Practical training at a media institution or company according to students’ interest while under the supervision of the faculty and the company. The duration of the internship must be at least 135 hours, or 9 weeks. Following the completion of the internship, students must submit a report to the committee.

JM 491 Special Project

Students choose to conduct an individual research project of their interest under the tutelage of a faculty advisor who will provide  an evaluation at the completion of the project.
